Lewis Smith Lake, Alabama

Lewis Smith Lake is located in north Alabama, just 20 miles northwest of Birmingham on the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River. It was originally created back in 1961, and since then has become an extremely popular destination for recreation and comfortable living.

The lake was formed when the Alabama Power Company built the Lewis Smith Dam, which is still one of the largest earthen dams in the eastern United States. It stands at over 300 feet high and 2,200 feet long. It’s also nearly a quarter of a mile wide at its base.

Smith Lake now covers 21,000 acres, and, despite the beauty of its deep, clear water, it wasn’t until the 80s when people really started developing the area around it. Now, you’ll find great options for waterfront activities, dining, shopping, and other recreational opportunities. The area remains a great location to have lake-front property and just unwind in the beautiful environment.
